As a leader in speed and resolution the EOS-1D Mark IV, captures the extraordinary. Freeze action at 16.1 Megapixels and at 10fps or with Full HD video, the EOS-1D Mark IV is ready for everything.

EOS-1D Mark IV - the high-speed choice for professionals

The Canon EOS-1D Mark IV is a highly specified professional DSLR that will have a wide appeal to photographers across a range of photographic disciplines. Featuring 16.1 Megapixel shooting at 10 frames-per-second it combines speed and high resolution for great quality images.

Who is it for?

The latest addition to Canon's EOS-1 DSLR series will clearly appeal to sports and wildlife photographers who are looking to capture fast action sequences due to its 10fps shooting speed at full 16.1 Megapixel resolution. The high resolution makes it perfect for shooting landscapes and portraits and the camera's rugged, durable body make it highly attractive for photojournalists who are seeking a reliable workhorse. In addition the camera's high ISO performance will appeal to social and wedding photographers who often operate in low light conditions.

Key features

  • 16.1 Megapixel APS-H CMOS sensor
  • 10fps shooting speed for up to 121 images (with UDMA card 6) in a burst
  • ISO 100-12,800 range with expansion up to 102,400 and down to 50
  • 45-point AF system with 39 cross-type points
  • 1920x1080p full HD EOS Movie shooting at 24, 25 and 30 frames per second
  • 1280x720p HD shooting at 50 or 60 frames per second
  • 63-zone metering system
  • Dual "DIGIC 4" processors
  • 100% viewfinder with 0.76x magnification
  • Ergonomically improved controls
  • Full camera control over HTTP with WFT-E2 II WiFi unit

Key benefits

The EOS-1D Mark IV features a newly developed, high-precision focusing system with 45 AF points, 39 of which are cross-type points. The 39 cross-type sensors are available when shooting in manual AF point selection mode. The EOS-1D Mark IV also offers a range of AF point selections to switch between including all 45 focus points, to selecting 19 AF points, 11 points, nine inner or nine outer points. The AF system also features a new AI Servo II AF algorithm with improved reliability, stability and focus-tracking performance.

The combination of gapless microlenses, a reduced distance from microlenses to the diodes and larger, more sensitive diodes, not to mention the processing power of the dual "DIGIC 4" processors means the EOS-1D Mark IV delivers superb high ISO performance. A combination of these factors has enabled the ISO range to be extended from 100-12,800 as standard, with three expansion settings - ISO 25,600 (H1), 51,200 (H2) and 102,400 (H3) - for when the light levels really fall, and a low setting of ISO 50.

The Dual "DIGIC 4" processors can process the data from the sensor quick enough and transfer it from the CMOS sensor to the buffer and out to the memory card rapidly to allow a full 10 frames-per-second shooting speed, even when shooting in full RAW. Shooting at 10fps the camera is more than capable of keeping up with almost any subject. With the ability to shoot up to 121 large JPEG images (with UDMA card 6) at the full 16.1 Megapixel resolution at 10fps, you can be confident of capturing fast action sequences.

To allow photographers to adapt the camera to their individual shooting preferences the EOS-1Ds Mark IV has 62 custom functions in four groups to control aspects of the camera's exposure, image, autofocus and general operation. New custom functions on the camera include AE microadjustment and FE microadjustment to allow photographers to precisely adjust exposure and flash exposure in 1/8-stop increments.

The EOS-1D Mark IV offers Full HD movie shooting with full manual control over exposure settings (shutter speeds, aperture and ISO), although auto movie exposure can also be used for those not so confident with shooting movies. The EOS-1D Mark IV also offers users the ability to change the frame rates at which movies are shot, offering a choice between 24, 25, 30, 50 or 60 frames per second depending on resolution selected. All of this gives photographers and filmmakers superb flexibility for shooting movie footage.

For when a full size RAW file is too much data, but you want to still work with the advantages of RAW, the EOS-1D Mark IV offers the choice of two smaller RAW files - M-RAW and S-RAW. These roughly equate to the same pixel dimensions as the M and S JPEG settings although they are not exactly the same due to the way the files are processed.

Key technologies

· AF system

In comparison to the EOS-1D Mark III the newly developed AF system has 20 extra cross-type AF points. As part of the improvements, 39 of the 45 AF points are now cross-type sensitive with lenses that have a maximum aperture of f/2.8 or faster, plus selective f/4 lenses. This provides better accuracy and a faster response no matter which AF point you select. The central point provides improved precision with lenses featuring a maximum aperture of f/2.8 or greater to really make use of fast, wide aperture lenses.

· CMOS Sensor

Canon develops and manufactures its own CMOS sensors in-house. Canon pioneered the use of the CMOS in DSLR cameras due to the performance advantage it offers in terms of speed and low power consumption. The sensor technology in the EOS-1D Mark IV is from the latest generation of CMOS sensors and because Canon designs and builds sensors it can ensure they work harmoniously with the camera's imaging processor, ensuring maximum quality.

The EOS-1D Mark IV sensor features gapless microlenses to more accurately focus light into the larger and more sensitive diodes to collect the light that reaches them and improve the high ISO performance. A new microlens design is used that places them closer to the diodes below - again aimed at improving the high ISO capabilities.

· DIGIC processing

Canon's "DIGIC 4" processors bring a lot of processing power to the camera - a single "DIGIC 4" processor is 25% faster than the previous generation DIGIC III processor. Utilising two of them provides the required power to deal with 16.1 Megapixels of data at 10fps. In addition the "DIGIC 4" processors consume very little electrical power thereby increasing the battery life of the camera.

· 63-zone metering sensor

Recording light is the basis of what a camera does. In order to record it correctly, it needs to be able to measure the light in the scene accurately. The EOS-1D Mark IV's metering system features 63 metering zones linked to the 45 AF points and an improved evaluative metering system for more consistent metering control.
